About Us

Wes Monteith

Born in Windsor, Ont. July 23, 1986, He moved to Ottawa area at age 4. Grew up in a good home with one brother, with skateboarding, snowboarding, and eventually musical instruments as hobbies/passtimes. Recieved first drumset from an uncle at age 10. Father and uncle both played drums earlier in their life. Began learning guitar at age 11 through lunchbreak lessons from 6th grade teacher Mark RaePeet, who unknowingly became a very inspirational and positive influence for Wes for the years to follow. Created first band in 1998/1999 with a couple friends from school. The band was called 'The Bad Samaritans' , who performed for the annual school talent show. Continued to play both guitar and drums in various different band projects throughout highschool, participating in the schools "Battle of the Bands" all 4 years, including his main focus; 'A.D.D.' - a punk-rock band consisting of 4 friends who loved to party and play loud. After college, there was a 5 - 6 year gap where changes occurred, people moved away and unfortunately all music projects came to a stop. In 2013, Wes and his brother Rod decided to start a new band, with Wes on rythym guitar and lead vocals, and Rod on drums, and inviting an old friend of Rods, Chase Campbell, in to the group to play lead guitar and backup vocals. A few months later, a long-time bandmate and friend of Wes', bassist Eric Hoogeveen joined the group to complete the 4 member band known as 'Old News & Borrowed Blues'. This group performed locally for approximately 5 years. Currently working on a new band/project called 'ORNATE' , which is a new style and sound, very diverse from all previous music projects in the past. Joined by former artist/performer 'Renaissance ', the two have created a new-age mix of an old-school sound, pulling straight from their roots.... the 90's.

Renaissance

He has spent 20+ years in the game. Started writing and producing his own material at the age of 15. He always had an eclectic taste in music that he inherited from his father. From early music to 70’s rock, alternative and grunge to rap and pop, it was fitting for him to translate all these influences into his music. He started performing at school and outdoor events, radio shows and after-hours clubs. In 1998, he won Ottawa’s Hip Hop Fest as best performing artist. Shortly after he joined his high school friend and another artist in forming a new version of the Canadian group King Size where he spent a few years performing and recording material. With the increasing interest in the group, He and a group member launched the indie label Royal Crown Entertainment, now known as Royal Krown Ent. After a short stint, he went on his own path. He continued to work the underground, performing at events across many cities, recording material and keeping his foot in the game and an ear to the streets. In 2007, he started to work on a new project to start and indie label called Vested Vinyl Records. Signing a few hiphop artists, bands as well as R&B-Pop local sensation Sheena Cane. Again, he tasked himself with producing/booking/promoting his artists. VV gained quite a bit of traction in the industry quickly, with Sheena Cane opening for Girlicious in 2008. After a couple years, Renaissance took a much-needed break from the industry to focus on family and other important personal priorities. But it didn’t last long, in 2011 he revived Vested Vinyl and again producing artists however this time, he was focused on himself as an artist. He put out a few tribute remixes and some freestyles and remixes but again had to leave the game. But he did spend a short time as co-host of the New Midnight Jamz on CKCU 93.1FM in Ottawa, alongside his longtime friend Daddy Rich. In 2013, he met Wes Monteith, whom he had seen as a great artist and was eager to sign him, which would be his return to the music business in a big way. This did not pan out as there were complications out of their control. That being said, Renaissance had come to the realization that if you can’t sign ‘em, join ‘em, in 2019 he proposed a project to Wes that would merge Hip hop and Alternative/Rock and bring back a bit of what the industry has been missing.Shortly after this meeting, Ornate was born, and it began…

Derek “D-Money” Looyen

After years of listening to the Red hot Chili Peppers, incubus, Bad Religion and Rage Against the Machine, Derek picked up a Bass in 2005 and started to work on his craft. The same year, he started a band and was also lead singer. This was a short lived project but continued to play parts in a number of local show bands and smaller music projects, performing at local venues and supporting local talent. Most recently, he was the bassist in the band “Muelkik” from 2015-16 where he toured around Ontario for shows and regaining his love for the music and also getting more experience under his belt as well as knowledge. Since the trio were already connected on a personal level for years, it was only fitting that the first call was to Derek when Wes and Renaissance needed a bassist. His versatility and incredible ear gives Ornate fresh rhythm and a key edge.

Nelson Horne

Nelson started drumming at an early age, learning from his father by playing over Led Zeppelin vinyls. From there his love for music expanded when he heard bands such as KoRn, Slipknot, Deftones and Limp Bizkit. He continued to work on his craft through his younger years and joined a metal band when he was in high school. They played various shows locally and some venues in the Ottawa Region. He’s always been inspired by KoRn drummer David Silveria, and it shows in his body of work that he has a professional outlook and high expectations of himself and the final product. When it came time for Ornate to do their first live-stream event, they were tight for time and short a drummer. Wes approached Nelson, who was more than eager to get back in the swing of things. He came through big time for the Ornate team, delivering a tight set to help the boys get through. From that point on, its been nothing but great vibes and a positive swing with him on the team. He shows great versatility when it comes to music, which is crucial when it comes to creating music in Ornate. It took less than an hour for the team to figure out that he was the ONLY fit for the band. After years of being on the sidelines of Music, which is the story for most of Ornate’s members, he couldn’t resist Wes Monteith’s offer to join the band full time and start carving a new path in the industry he’s always had a passion for.
